Is the Kindle E-Reader Right For Me?

With the increased usage of tablets and smart phones, many people are left wondering if the Kindle e-reader is right for them.  In our family for example, Erin and I each have a tablet and a smart phone.  And, all 4 of the devices have the Kindle App that we use to read books.  However, the story does not end there.

The idea for this article came after our son was born and Erin found herself reading on the phone instead of the tablet.  I thought it was strange that she preferred the small screen of the phone until she explained it was for two important reasons.

1)  Being able to use one hand

2)  The weight of the tablet made her hand tired quickly when compared to her phone.

This was quite the revelation for me.  Our plan had always been to use our tablets as e-readers.  While Erin could have continued to use the phone, it had its own challenges.  Mainly the screen was too small and the battery life was short.  Suddenly, it made sense to have one more gadget in our house.

The Kindle E-Reader Family

Kindle is the market leader when it comes to e-readers.  The combination of quality products, a huge market for books, and being backed by Amazon make it the top choice for a majority of readers.  We wanted to highlight two of the four Kindle family members though you can look at the entire Kindle Family as well by clicking here.

Kindle 6" with ink screenKindle

The Kindle is the least expensive on the market and starts at an impressive $69.99.  The 6″ screen is big enough to easily read though small enough to fit in your pocket.  Battery concerns are eliminated as each charge lasts around one month.  It is an excellent choice for anyone looking to enter the e-reader market without a big investment.  If you are looking for a light to read in the dark though, take a look at the Kindle Paperwhite below.

Here are the specs on the Kindle

  • Less than 6 ounces – lighter than a paperback, fits in your pocket
  • New darker, hand-tuned fonts for easier reading
  • Reads like paper with no glare, even in bright sunlight

The Kindle Paperwhite is an exciting addition to Amazon’s e-reader family.  Its size is nearly the same as the Kindle though it features their patented front light for reading in the dark.  The front light is great because you can read in the dark without illuminating the room.  Great for that person in the room that is sleeping instead of reading!

Additional features include 25% higher contrast for easier reading in all light levels and an impressive 8 weeks of battery life!  Plus, it still only weighs 7.5 ounces.
